Submission Guidelines

Interested in writing for us?

Purpose

The purpose of our blog is to highlight social inequalities and the ways in which law and policy exacerbate the divide between rich and poor.

Submission

Please submit any proposals in advance of your blog submission to our academic lead, Katie Bales, at katie.bales@bristol.ac.uk. Katie will then confirm receipt of your interest and pass your contact details to the student editorial board who will manage your submission from that point onwards.

The editorial team are happy to provide advice or guidance where needed and will answer any questions you may have about ideas, content and submission.

Upon submission of your draft blog, your writing will be checked over and revised for approval by a member of the editorial team. We retain the right to withhold publication of a blog where the content fails to meet the standards required.

We appreciate that you may be balancing academic and extracurricular obligations so contact one of the editors to inform them of any reasons that prevent you from submitting your piece on time before the scheduled publication date.

Style

Blogs submissions should be 1000 words in length. There is scope for 2000-word articles if agreed in advance by the editing team.

As the blog is written for broad readership, avoid specialist language and make use of simple language throughout, explaining industry-specific terms.

Ensure your piece is free from grammatical and typographical errors before submission.

Demonstrate a depth of research on the issue, displaying critical insight of the issue throughout the piece.

Spelling can be either the UK or US spelling as long as it remains consistent throughout the piece.

When using someone’s name, include their first and last name. For every subsequent mention, use their last name.

When referring to a company or an organisation, you should use “it” as opposed to “they” as an organisation is a singular entity.

Italicise the name of any sources used in the text e.g. newspapers.

Formatting

Please send the piece in a Microsoft word or Google Docs format to ensure we can make changes if needed.

For direct quotations use double quotation marks (“”) and avoid block quotes for the sake of coherence and clarity of the underlying message.

Include a bibliography at the end of your piece, citing the materials used. You do not have to provide footnotes.

Provide hyperlinks to essential sources used through the body of the text. Avoid hyperlinking all the sources used to maintain the focus of the reader.

Before submitting your draft

Submit the article with a draft title which the editorial team retain the discretion to revise.

Provide 4-6 keywords the piece can be associated with.

Provide a paragraph and photo of yourself if you’d like to have a brief about the writer section accompanying your piece.
